“CopBlock is just propaganda”toomuchtothink

I hear this over and over from CopSuckers and LEOs (active and retired) alike who are unwilling to open their minds to the idea that something might actually be wrong with how the service of policing is provided today. My response to these claims has been the same, and simply put, that, “Yes, CopBlock is propaganda,” but before I explain why, let’s discuss the definition of propaganda:

prop·a·gan·da
ˌpräpəˈɡandə/
  1. 1derogatory information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
“he was charged with distributing enemy propaganda”

The definition of this word is interesting to me to say the least. Derogatory means, “showing a critical or disrespectful attitude,” so it follows that derogatory information is information presented with a critical or disrespectful attitude. Obviously, I’m guilty of this with respect to my work here at CopBlock.org. However, the synonyms for propaganda as set forth in the dictionary are “information, promotion, advertising, spin, and disinformation.” How, or why, does propaganda have a negative connotation to it? Is propaganda bad?

It seems to me that propaganda is simply information, with the distinction being that if you don’t like the information you’re being provided, or you don’t believe it, then you’re more likely to call it propaganda. This is why I call government information “government propaganda” and I’m sure it’s why CopSuckers/LEOs call the content here propaganda. To be honest, I’m fine with it, because it is. All information is simply propaganda. We’ve established this: the problem is when people try to claim their content as neutral or the “no spin” zone, when the reality is that no one is neutral and the “no spin zone” is really spinning like a motherfucker.

This is the key difference between the information provided from the mainstream and the information provided through the decentralized concept of CopBlock. I can only speak for myself, but I think what I’m about to say relates to other contributors (as well as most alternative media sites) here. I don’t claim to be neutral or without bias; in fact, I’m extremely biased. My experiences, my research, and the years of covering police-related topics has brought me to the conclusion that, “Badges Don’t Grant Extra Rights.” I believe most police officers do more harm than good, and I’ve continually backed this idea up through my work as an activist. I think most of the contributors here would agree with this, and aren’t hiding the fact that they believe the police are creating more harm than good.

Of course, I can only speak for myself, but yes, I create propaganda. Yet, I’m not misleading anyone. You came to CopBlock.org, not LovethePoliceState.com, and though I’m glad you decided to visit this site, I hope it’s not your only stop. Propaganda is information, and the information I provide as a contributor to this site is that of cops killing unarmed people, abusing rights, being CopBlocked, all along with my personal views on issues with police today. Should I be the only source you visit? Hell no, visit PoliceOne.com, CopBlock-Exposed.org and any other outlet diametrically opposed to my beliefs.  See for yourself if the information, propaganda, or spin they provide of officers who violate people’s rights is acceptable in your mind; read their side of the Brown, Garner, or Scott killings. Then, decide for yourself who is providing you information and who is spreading propaganda.

What I will give you, via my work here at CopBlock.org, is my biased, spinning, yet factually supported belief that government-provided services are absolutely harmful to everyone. If you want to call it propaganda, that’s cool – just make sure you label that textbook your children bring home from their government prison with the same title. Knowledge is power and we’re not going to give you either; you have to find them yourself.
